72-1881. Motor vehicle liability insurance and medical payments insurance. The board of education of every school district or its contract carrier may purchase motor vehicle liability insurance and medical payments insurance for the protection and benefit of the school district and the officers, agents and employees for the school district and the students, officers, agents and employees thereof who are transported in or operate school buses owned, operated, maintained or controlled by the school district and of persons while riding in or upon, entering or alighting from such vehicles.
